Chicken, Bone Broth and Oatmeal Dog Food.

Comfort food that packs alot of nutrients.

So somethings, when it comes to dog food, just can't be made pretty! But while I enjoy having a photograph that makes everyone think "Yum!" this particular dish is more about the variety of nutrient dense meat sources in it. I have talked a few times previously about the benefits of multiple organ sources for dogs and that muscle meat just simple does not have all the nutrients that a dog requires. There is a website that breaks all this down, and I mention it all on this previous post here.

This meal has ground turkey and chicken, chicken gizzards and chicken livers to give a great variety of meat sources.

The secret source of nutrient here though, that I have not talked about before, is bone broth! Bone broth is as good for dogs as it is for humans. Its extremely good for their joints, helps to detox their liver and supports gut health. You can check out more about it here.

I often purchase whole chickens and cut them up rather than cooking them whole. But I don't want to waste the carcass. So I make bone broth for my family often and freeze single portions to use in cooking. On this day I had a fresh one from the dinner previously so I just boiled it down for the day in order to release all the great marrow from the bones.

Here is what I did to get this broth into the meal, without creating a soup. I cooked the oatmeal in bone broth... the perfect absorbent material that also has its own health qualities for dogs. I mixed 1 1/3 cups of quick oats in a dish with 3 cups of bone broth.... and cooked until done.

I also used the bone broth to cook the ground chicken and turkey.

I mixed all the meat together, cutting the liver and gizzards into small bite sized pieces but leaving some larger pieces, to have variety in the consistency of the dish so this wasn't so "porridge like."

I mixed in the oatmeal and some cut up green beans!

Again this will last 3 days in the fridge, but approximately 3 months in the freezer. I vacuum seal these into individual portions so I have a variety on hand! This made 8 portions!

The recipe:

1 pound of ground turkey

1 pound of ground chicken

1 pount of chicken livers

1 pount of chicken gizzards.

Cook and mix well together.

Cook a chicken carcass for approximately 10 hours, you will see the water start to thicken and turn gelatinous.

Cook some quick oats 1 1/3 cups of oats with 3 cups of bone broth, cook stove top or in the microwave as per your oats instructions.

Mix with the meat and add in 1 1/2 cups of green beans.
